Virtual Leadership Series Announced

Managing teams virtually is essential in our busy world. While the use of Facebook and other social platforms seems the norm in our private lives, people may not connect the value they get from the use of similar peer group platforms and models in the workplace. Maher will be launching an informative series on virtual leadership in the upcoming months. Jen Chingwe, Project Manager and Senior Instructional Designer put the series together. Jen has had a mix of projects with Maher where virtual leadership of peer groups is a central focus, and she has exciting and valuable experience to share on this topic. Jen is about to receive her doctorate in Education, Design of Learning Contexts from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

Bringing Home National Titles

Two National Champions were added to Maher’s extended family at the end of 2017. The daughters of Donna Batt, Payroll Specialist, and Catherine Baker, CLO and Director of the Private Sector, brought home American Youth Cheer first place titles with their respective cheerleading squads. It was a first-time journey for Catherine’s daughter, yet a familiar experience for Donna’s daughter who made her sixth trip to the Florida-based competition. Both girls had amazing teams and leadership, and they worked hard to achieve this impressive goal.

“What made the experience manageable as a working mother was also the leadership that took place off the mats,” Baker explains. “Being a life-long learner, I tend to connect wins in my personal life to my professional world. In this case, it was a masterful use of online peer groups and virtual leadership. Retention Gains Tied to Onboarding and Mentoring

Chris Mokros, National Training Director of StoneMor, came to the organization with the intention of creating and implementing a Training Strategy aligned with business goals. StoneMor was growing quickly and, at that time, there was not a centralized learning function or technology infrastructure.  Chris’ key focus out of the gates naturally was the sales function.

StoneMor Partners L.P. worked with Maher to launch an online university. New hire onboarding for Sales was the first blended solution offered and was rolled out in 2015. It includes a mix of eLearning, classroom instruction, on-the-job training, and post-training pull through tools. Last year, StoneMor added a formal mentoring program for new hires in the Sales function, as well. The combination of these two offerings has doubled retention and has proven to more rapidly improve sales performance of new hires who completed the new training path when compared to… Read more →

Lessons on Job Training I Learned in the Slums of Mumbai

I recently spent some time touring India. We did the “northern route” (for those who know the terrain), and I was there on vacation, but learned important lessons about career training as well. Let me explain.

First, for the travelers among you, I started in Delhi, and moved on to Varanasi (Hindus make a pilgrimage there like Muslims might to Mecca), Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur and finished up in Mumbai (formerly Bombay).

It was a trip full of contrasts – from the busy streets of Old Delhi, to the Hindu priests and faithful on the banks of the Ganges, the Taj Mahal and opulent palaces of the Maharajas’, to the unspeakable condition of Mumbai’s slums. If you think there is a growing divide between the rich and poor in America … Read more →

Using Process Mapping to Support Transformational Change

A few weeks ago, my colleague Lynn Bajorek shared a blog post that described Maher & Maher’s recent process mapping work with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s Office of Employment and Training (OET). In the post, Lynn detailed how we used “as-is” and “should-be” process mapping with OET and its partners to examine several critical processes (Rapid Response, annual monitoring, and policy development), identify inefficiencies and challenges, and develop enhanced processes to better align the performance of these functions with the agency’s mission and goals. As part of our work with OET, we also developed and facilitated a virtual process mapping “how-to” training for staff.

On the face of it, process mapping appears pretty straightforward: you pick a process that needs some attention; map how that process takes place today and define… Read more →

Process Map to Fully Align Your Organization’s Functions with its Mission and Goals

To effectively lead change and innovation, organizations need to strategically allocate resources and establish efficient processes. The Maher & Maher Process Improvement Process℠ helps organizations to look critically at their internal or external processes to identify inefficiencies and ensure all resources and functions are aligned to achieve the identified mission and goals.

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s Office of Employment and Training (OET) recently engaged Maher & Maher to lead the organization through an intensive process mapping effort designed to maximize the agency’s resources and strategic implementation of three processes critical to the agency’s mission: Rapid Response, Monitoring, and Policy Development. The project provided OET with “as-is” maps which outlined the current, inefficient processes; “should be” maps which included new and refined steps to maximize efficiency and effectiveness; and clear recommendations… Read more →

Partnerships that Strengthen State Apprenticeship Expansion Efforts

Successful workforce development efforts are all about partnerships.  To succeed, you need an ecosystem of collaboration and support that stretches across workforce development, education, and business.  In recognition of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re highlighting great examples of partnerships that states are using to expand apprenticeship opportunities for businesses and workers.  Have a great partnership you’re proud of?  Tell us about it in the comments!

Partnerships with local workforce areas.  Increasing the number of apprenticeships means expanding and accelerating business outreach and program development.  States like Idaho are using their local workforce partners as part of that effort.  Idaho redesigned its apprenticeship business outreach model to bring together workforce, education, and industry intermediary partners, and equip them to use a consultative sales model focused around business needs and customized solutions.  In each of the state&rsquo… Read more →

Designing Instruction for All Generations of Adult Learners

There have been major changes for my husband and me this year as we moved from our residence of 33 years to a new location and struggled to downsize our “stuff.” As you can imagine, there was a lot of it! During the purge, I came across a set of encyclopedias, Better Homes and Gardens how-to books, and Speak & Read/Math/Spell learning toys. When my 9-year-old grandson looked at me puzzled while holding the Speak & Math, I began to reflect on how learning has changed over the years as I explained that his mom used it to learn math.

As a designer of eLearning and virtual instructor-led training at Maher & Maher, I am constantly challenged with developing instruction that keeps every learner engaged. We know all too well that dumping the “kitchen sink” into a PowerPoint, adding some narration, and… Read more →

What’s Trending in Learning?

Moving to microlearning is just one shift that we have been helping our clients navigate as they refine their Talent Development strategies.  There are others that are essential to engage Modern Learners and allow them to excel by onboarding and upskilling in both an effective and efficient manner.   We focused on the value of storytelling and social / peer learning in our last newsletter, but there is even more we can do.  Time is money, regardless of industry.  It is critical that as our workloads expand and continue to shift to address the pulls and pushes of our economic times, we are driving a learning strategy that is framed for success.

We’d like to share an article that summarized key learning trends in the corporate world to give a flavor of what can be done to move our learning strategies in… Read more →
