The opioid epidemic is ravaging communities across the nation and we are now seeing clear impacts to regional, as well as statewide, labor force participation rates. While data is still being gathered we know that in 2015, 919,400 prime-age individuals were not in the labor force due to opioids; and between 1999 and 2015, the decline in labor force participation cumulatively cost the economy 12.1 billion work hours and $702.1 billion in real output.
A number of public programs are aimed at addressing the health care and sociological impacts of this specific drug, as well as drug use generally. This week I was in gorgeous Missoula, MT at the NGA Summer Workforce Liaisons meeting, with Stephanie Veck, Maher’s new project director for industry engagement in apprenticeships and work-based learning. We were not at all surprised that apprenticeship was once again a topic of conversation among state workforce leaders across the country. It is a timely discussion as the Office of Apprenticeship has awarded another round of State Apprenticeship Expansion grants. Topics regarding innovations and challenges included the evolution of the definition of apprenticeship and resulting culture change, as well as the expansion of apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship. Congratulations to Jen on receipt of her Ed.D. in the Design of Learning Environments from Rutgers University!
Jen diligently completed and defended her dissertation on Affordances of Community of Inquiry Methods in Measuring and Evaluating Teaching Presence to Guide Practice, while working full time at Maher, and being a mother of teenage twins.
Jen has brought a new level of expertise to our firm spearheading some of our most innovative technology-driven learning including the MOOC, Leading Change While Implementing Innovation, for Workforce Innovation Fund (WIF) leadership, and online peer problem-solving cohort groups for leadership implementing the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA).

Several members of the Maher Team spent last week mingling with workforce pros at the National Association of Workforce Board’s (NAWB) annual conference in Washington, D.C. Over the years we see the NAWB Conference as one of a few, key national meetings that keeps us connected with our colleagues and clients in the Workforce Development System, and also keeps us connected to important trends and challenges across the United States.
This year was particularly special for us, however, as we premiered our new relationship with IMPAQ following our much talked about acquisition by them at the end of 2017. Maher Chief Learning Officer, Catherine Baker recently had the honor to serve on a Mid New Jersey ATD Panel along with the Head of Field Force Development at Bristol-Myers Squibb and Head of Talent Development for the Linde Group. The topic of the panel was “Learning Trends.”
