This week I was in gorgeous Missoula, MT at the NGA Summer Workforce Liaisons meeting, with Stephanie Veck, Maher’s new project director for industry engagement in apprenticeships and work-based learning. We were not at all surprised that apprenticeship was once again a topic of conversation among state workforce leaders across the country. It is a timely discussion as the Office of Apprenticeship has awarded another round of State Apprenticeship Expansion grants. Topics regarding innovations and challenges included the evolution of the definition of apprenticeship and resulting culture change, as well as the expansion of apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship. Legislative initiatives, reorganizational efforts, infrastructure, funding apprenticeship and messaging to targeted populations like parent and guidance counselors were also highlighted. Maher has been a proud partner in many of these areas and is working with organizations at the local, state and national level to… Read more →

As a busy executive at Maher and IMPAQ, I would like to understand how you approach your professional development. “Why do you think professional development is so important today?”

Two National Champions were added to Maher’s extended family at the end of 2017. The daughters of Donna Batt, Payroll Specialist, and Catherine Baker, CLO and Director of the Private Sector, brought home American Youth Cheer first place titles with their respective cheerleading squads. It was a first-time journey for Catherine’s daughter, yet a familiar experience for Donna’s daughter who made her sixth trip to the Florida-based competition. Both girls had amazing teams and leadership, and they worked hard to achieve this impressive goal.
“What made the experience manageable as a working mother was also the leadership that took place off the mats,” Baker explains. “Being a life-long learner, I tend to connect wins in my personal life to my professional world. In this case, it was a masterful use of online peer groups and virtual leadership. After… Read more →

As we prepare for the holiday weekend, we here at Maher just wanted to pause briefly to recognize the contributions of American workers for the hard work, long hours and competitive spirit that have made this country “work” for over 2 centuries.
Historically, “Labor Day” had its roots in the labor movement and was created in order to celebrate the contributions of labor to the American economy, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s website exploring the history of the Day. On this special day we all celebrate the men and women who built America’s infrastructure, our dams, bridges and roadways, and we also recognize those who are building the information superhighway, securing our communities, caring for our elderly and youth, preparing our food and educating our young – all… Read more →
Over a year ago, I started reading articles on a rare solar eclipse that was going to occur across the United States. It was billed as a must-see event by astronomers, and by the luck of it, it would pass close to where we live.
It would be the “first to sweep across the entire country since 1918.”What is a solar eclipse?
This video answers common questions people have about it.So, we started investigating options...
You can go to Oregon, spend the night in Nashville, even stay in Hopkinsville, Kentucky and enjoy the Little Green Men Festival along with your eclipse experience. Then we realized the kids would be back in school (major buzz kill). So, our location area had to narrow. We wanted to stay within a few hours’ drive and still experience the path… Read more →
This last weekend brought a time for celebration to the extended Maher Family, as long-time associate, Margaret Lamb, watched her daughter walk down the aisle. Margaret is a client and team favorite here at Maher, where she is a stalwart on our WorkforceGPS support team for USDOL-ETA.
If you are a member of WorkforceGPS (ETA’s primary platform for technical assistance and communications with the Nation’s Workforce Development System), you have no-doubt encountered Margaret. Her smiling face and customer-first attitude makes her a key member of our support staff!
But on Friday, June 16th, Margaret’s mind was anywhere but on WorkforceGPS business, as she attended her BIG DAY and watched daughter Samantha Marie Rooney “tie the knot” with her beau – Douglas Damiano, Jr.
All of us here wish the newlyweds a long and… Read more →
