Why and Who of Storytelling

One of my favorite TV shows out right now is This is Us. This show is such a mega hit because there are several different storylines running concurrently throughout the season, and there is literally something in each show that anyone, from all walks of life, can relate to. It touches the viewers on an emotional and realistic level. Plus, it draws us in week after week, wondering how the story is going to develop.

As an Instructional Designer, I’m of the mindset that my role is equivalent to that of the Director of a show like This is Us (except, my pay check might have a few less digits!). Instructional Designers are the best people to make learning come to life through storytelling because we can connect the needs of our clients and the expertise of the subject matter experts (SMEs) with the talents of the Learning & Development team. Most of all, we know who the learner is, how they learn, and what we are asking them to do. That’s the basis for good storytelling.

Today, we see most employees are inundated with pressures of daily activities. Training can be perceived as a mundane task or a necessary evil. What if we could change that narrative and transform training into a welcomed escape that ultimately enhances our skill set and body of knowledge, and enables us to perform our jobs more easily and with greater efficiency?

As Maher & Maher continues to grow, we strive to embrace storytelling as a key tool in our Instructional Design toolbox. We use this tool to engage learners in a riveting way that creates an emotional and human connection to our clients’ business, their people, the products and services they offer, and their customers. We seek to understand the stories behind the learning objectives, performance goals, and success criteria, and we weave those stories throughout the intent of the training message.

Who says that learning has to be hard or boring? Not me and not Maher. We believe that learning should feel like inspiration, training should be entertaining, and development should be a positive part of life. This is Maher. This is Us.
